I have been familiar with this steam-powered metal band Automaton for a couple of years now, since their 2013 teaser EP. I call it a teaser because it features some of the tracks on this their full length debut album, which is quite a concept album in its own part. Some fans may no doubt be puzzled by the imagery here, as the band has a complete steampunk approach. But to those who may question it, I merely point at all the vampires, pirates and every other trope that has found its way into metal, it was only a matter of time before steampunk also reared its goggle-covered head. I say, full steam ahead! As far as the music goes, Duncan Batchworth III may not be your stereotypical looking frontman, but after seeing this band live and hearing the music, I have to say, he is definitely underrated and worthy of some attention. The music is quite solid USPM, though not as intense as or high tempo as some of the contemporaries, the melodic vocals and styles are all very well done. The story is quite good if you are inclined to concept albums and the production is really nice. Captain Luther Meade and Markus Wolverhamption do a really nifty job on with their axework. The riffs are solid throughout the album. Mechanic James O’Brian does a bang up job with the drums and finally Isaac Grimwood completes the rhythm section very well. Definitely soak in the steampunk goodness or if that really isn’t your thing, at least just kick back and enjoy some really good power metal. The airship is about to depart, all aboard!
