Okay I am really kicking myself now for not checking this out sooner. I saw a ton of hype for the band and was a bit slow on the uptake, still having the groove and nu metal of days of old blinding me to what the new and improved Varga is all about. I finally have seen the light and looked further into this Varga machine and I am glad I did! What we have here is something special and unique, incorporating a lot of odd bits and pieces of many different styles and influences, a touch of the groove is still present and a bit of nu age anger, and a heap of thrash coating on a doomy undercarriage and we have a punishing and riveting behemoth of METAL! Varga are another band that refuses to follow into a neat little labelling system, a bit of the old a bit of the new but all eminently Varga! If you are one of the few, who like me still envisioned the band’s earlier incarnations and have held back, stop it immediately and give this a spin! I don’t care if you are a fan of Machine Head, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Metallica-head or (insert your band name here)head, Varga bring something new and different to the table, hell…they brought their own table! Do yourself a favor and give it a spin…or three as there is so much to take in with these six tracks that one time through just doesn’t cut it. Return Of The Metal? Indeed!
Choice Tracks – After Life Comes, Three Section Staff, Evil Drifters, Money Talks
There has been a decided influx of what was old is new again and that really strikes home with the classic NWOBHM movement of yore as so many of those bands from back in the day that never really seemed to find their niche in the oversaturated English landscape fell to the wayside, albeit from either band friction, label issues or outside forces or other reasons. Many of them were vastly talented bands that just didn’t get their rightful break or just dues. Now many years later a new wave has started and some really killer music is finally seeing the light of day. Due to another incarnation of the band taking up the Deep Machine moniker, this group has taken up the mantle of The Deep, and as such they are definitely one of those bands that need to be welcomed back with open arms. Premonition is an incredible blitz of NWOBHM done the way it should be. It is definitely on the more melodic side of the spectrum here and not dissimilar to countrymates in Satan, Salem UK and Weapon UK in style and substance! The entire album from end to end is very accessible hard rock and proto metal (with even a smattering of AOR). There isn’t a single filler track on here (is it me or does You Take My Breath Away sound a bit like Dynasty era Kiss …and I say that as a compliment actually as I do love that album…it’s a lot of fun). Every single track on this album could easily be spun on the radio and all it takes is one listen through to hook the listener in. I know I am hooked!! My Premoniton is that The Deep will be making waves across the UK and Europe very shortly!!
Choice Tracks – The Rider, You Take My Breath Away, Nightstalker, Out Of Touch, All I Want, Spellbound (basically all of ‘em!)
Klaymore is a four-piece heavy metal band hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From fast-paced and in your face to melody-...driven and memorable (and hitting everywhere else in between), Klaymore is an all-guns-blazing, metal onslaught. Klaymore comes armed with an arsenal of vicious dual-lead guitar licks, thunderous double-bass drumming, octaves upon octaves of vocals, and bass lines bursting through the mix (not to mention a sense of humor). Whether they're singing about their favorite Nintendo games, mindless self-destruction, or the “slimiest bitch in Columbus, Ohio,” audiences find the band's lyrics oddly easy to connect with. Through a combination of memorable musicality meeting relatable lyrical content, Klaymore is ushering in a “New Breed” of heavy metal.
Long time ago in a galaxy far far away…
Fueled by beer the trash metal machinery from Rybnik called Soul Collector was brought into life in the year 2007. The group was created by Zbigniew Bizoń- former bassist of Goddess of Sin. He invited to partnership his cousin Łukasz Bizoń a former guitarist of mentioned group and two good friends from his neighborhood- brothers Halamoda.
Michał “Zmarły” Halamoda becomes their second lead guitar and the older of two brothers Rafał “Don Vito” Halamoda accidentally stands behind the microphone. The group was almost complete despite the fact they still lack drummer and as it came out later it was their course for the next few years. Though they were incomplete, young enthusiasts of heavy music and even heavier beverage decide to begin their first rehearsals with the drum machine.
The beginnings occur to be the mix of horror and tragicomedy and can be easily qualified as enormous noise coming out of trials to master the chaos, wherewith all members had one goal in their minds- to play thrash metal inspired by American school. What is more, although Zbigniew and Łukasz had a quite big experience in playing music you can’t really say that about two brothers Halamoda who tried to catch up with enthusiasm and the will to play. Unfortunately, after few months the conflict between two cousins Bizoń grows up larger and larger every day. Dissension and rehearsals with drum machine resulted in Zbigniew leaving. After that Łukasz becomes the new leader.
After short search Mateusz “Yogi” Wajs becomes new bassist of Soul Collector- a 15 year old musician who plays only for few months but despite that fact he stays till present times.
The personal changes resulted in necessity to refresh first compositions created mainly by Michał and few covers- classics like Kat, Testament or Slayer. The band debut falls on May 2008 during the “Gitariada” preview organized in Wodzisław Śląski where despite defects like the lack of drummer the group scores the second place. Till today it was the only music preview in which Soul Collector ever took part and this can mean two things. The band really sucks ass or they simply don’t give a fuck and all people who organize such redneck shows simply do not feel the true spirit of Rock & Roll (we believe in the second version).
With aforementioned squad Soul Collector records its first demo material (to be honest monster material) called “Demo(N)” and continues concerting. Meanwhile Łukasz Bizoń chooses completely different style of music and decides to kick himself out the band which makes other members very happy. Dawid “Stafar” Stafarczyk is the new replacement and becomes the second lead guitar, he stays in the band for the next few years giving shows in Poland and Czech Republic and takes part in recording second demo material called Soul Collector. Much about that period Soul Collector finds its first drummer- Krzysztof “Sacerdos” Ster. Despite that, the bad luck is still upon the band and in December 2010 Dawid “Stafar” Stafarczyk decides to leave the group and devotes himself to his second band The Crossroads (currently he’s a member of Tester Gier). Before his leaving he records “I Saw” which appears on “Silesian Butcher II”- compilation created by Snake Eyes group.
The search of a new a guitarman last for about two months and a new person who joins Soul Collector is Artur “Iron” Kajzer from Gliwice. More or less around that period the band starts partnership with nonexistent today concert agency “Live Art” and plays with Danish metal legend Artillery- two shows in Wroclaw and Katowice.
After squad stabilization and bringing to perfection 11 tracks the band starts recording their debut album called “Thrashmageddon”. Person responsible for recording and production of the album is the original bassist and a former leader- Zbigniew Bizoń. The record takes place in the studio placed in the rehearsal room belonging to Orchestral Association KWK “Chwałowice”. The first recorded tracks are “Pure Fucking Evil” and “I Saw” which appear on the release “Thrashing Damnation Thru Compilation”. The release is published in the 2012 by “Defense Records” from Cracow and presents intersection of underground thrash metal scene. The idea was brought into life by Jan “Mekong” Sienkiewicz- Terrordome drummer. The release contains 22 tracks of 10 leading young trash metal bands chosen by the creator. Two tracks published by Soul Collector are greeted with warm welcome by critics as well audience. What is more, the idea is so well-aimed that one year later a second part comes out.
The year 2013 passes mainly on recording and perfecting recorded tracks and this lasts ‘till the end of November. Soul Collector starts partnership with Jacek Kurnatowski, known from working with Alastor who is responsible for mastering the record. The band stays concert active playing with Mech, Horrorscope, Terrordome and Alastor among others. Meanwhile “Pure Fucking Evil” shows up on “Sharks Attack”, another compilation this time devoted to metal scene in Rybnik. The search to find the proper label lasts for 5 months and the new publisher is “Defense Records”, label responsible for releasing “Trashing Damnation…” and partner of groups like Horrorscope and Terrordome. The album appears in May 2014 receiving good reviews and welcomed warmly by the fans.
Few months before the great release another personal changes take place. The band ends partnership with drummer Krzysztof “Sacerdos” Ster and engages Dawid “Dave” Kuźnik- former drummer of The Crossroads. In this squad the band works till present times. In September 2014 SC starts working with music journalist Vlad Nowajczyk know from articles written for Polish edition of “Hard Rocker”. His responsibilities are PR and bands promotion in media and Internet. The group remains active, what will bring the future only time will show but as one of the reviewers noticed, despite so many personal changes during those 7 years the band still works what undoubtedly shows that two brothers Halamoda are really tough sons of bitches. BLACK HAWK from Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) belongs almost among the founding fathers of the classic Metal-scene. The band was formed in 1981 but had only some self-releases before they split up in 1997. Their first album “Twentyfive” was released in 2005 after their reunion. Their second album “Dragonride” and the two following were released by Karthago Records. Now our Pure Underground sub-label presents their latest album “A Mighty Metal Axe”. Their musical style has changed not very much since the 2010 album “Straight to Hell”; the eleven tracks feature mostly hard Metal. Straight and quick double-bass songs like “The Fighter”, “Heroes” and the final song “Beast in Black”, catchy SAXON-like pounders like “Nightrider” or “Killer”, or the more quiet and exceptional “FashionVictim”, which got an acoustic-guitar intro: “A Mighty Metal Axe” breathes the pure spirit of the glorious German Metal- and NWoBHM-times. Udo Bethke’s rough but very melodic voice, the harmonic interplay of both guitars and the firm production which has lots of rough edges give BLACK HAWK’s sound a special kind of originality, which makes them distinct from the multitude of releases. Powerful, straight and true Heavy Metal of the best kind: A manifesto for all Heavy Metal traditionalists!
Mage. Five unholy wizards compelled by the power of the riff and dark, dark magic. Forged in dragons fire atop a lightning l...ashed mountain in the year of our Lord two thousand and ten. Rumbling riffs combined with finely hewn words of power to conjure up images of otherwordly things creeping forth from the darkest reccesses... *ahem* ...Sorry about that... If you have a low "fantastical bullshit" threshold, we're basically five guys who've been around in a variety of bands over the years, brought together by a shared love of "THEE RIFF" and a desire to jam and see what happens. Turns out that what happens is a Stoner/Doomy/Metal type thing, but with a whole bunch of other elements thrown in. First studio EP released in 2011 and first full album recorded 2012. Come worship at the altar...
