Today's New Band Of The Day focuses on a doom metal band in my own hometown of Milwaukee in Asatta! Their brand new CD just released and the CD Release Party is in just four short days! The band brings forth a bit of ambience and drone to their sludgy doomy mix and feature a five piece set up with keyboards, bringing forth a very rich and heavy sound! Worth checking out!!
The music of Dead Loss is a safe haven from the relentless everyday grind...like a padded room...from within which you can gaze with unclouded eyes upon the horror that is Life and see it for what it really is, laugh maniacally in its face, and be afraid of it no longer. It is music that elevates the soul, letting it soar like an eagle...or perhaps like a vulture, who, after rising above it all in majestic splendor will, in the next instant, plunge head first into a putrid pile of rotting meat, feeling no disjunction whatsoever in this behavior.
Dead Loss songs are musically diverse, but with an overarching sense of cohesion in the moods and world views depicted that makes a broad body of work fit naturally under one heading. The songs plough through the darkest recesses of the mind, often touching on some fundamental aspect of human nature through examining the unraveling of an individual. The music is firmly rooted in old-fashioned heavy metal, the writing driven by the needs of the song rather than showcases of flashiness, and the sound driven by the touch of the players rather than technological assistance. There are furious thrash metal riffs and machine gun fire double kicks; sludgy Black Sabbath-like behemoths; melodic guitar/bass interaction reminiscent of Iron Maiden; interlocking riffs and drum patterns in the style of Pantera; song-within-a-song style guitar solos; rumbling, subterranean bass lines; and vocals that range from a chilling drone to a defiant roar to a searing scream without losing sight of melody, the voice a conduit for the bleak world of the songs. Accounts of basic human needs warped into twisted obsessions...tales of rage turned inwards, of panic and emptiness...nihilistic visions of death and destruction. It is a disturbing journey, a cathartic experience from which the listener emerges strangely revitalized but not quite the same as before.
Vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Asko Korpela, with long-time musical comrade Tatu Ruotsalainen on bass, have long sought the right lineup to bring the songs to life in a live setting, and with the recent additions of guitarist Israel Real (Sacrament, Ceaseless Torment) and drummer Jouni Kurikka (Scarpath, Anger Cell), the pieces are falling into place. Branching out of their hometowns of Helsinki and Nummela, the band is looking to play anywhere and everywhere. Look out for Dead Loss at a rock/metal-oriented venue near you...
Today's TML New Band Of The Day features traditional Germany metalheads, Axewielder. These straight up old school metallians play a very NWOBHM-inspired metal and have been quietly plying their trade for fifteen years, making them a venerable member of the traditional metal ranks. Not the most active, they have just released a split with the Alley Cats featuring Heavy Metal Hammer, which is their first release since their full length debut, The Nightcrew in 2009. Hopefully with much more to come!!
Slaves To Sin is the top notch debut album from this London based metal band. The band mixes traditional metal, thrash and some more modern sounds to complete a package that has a definite homage to Metallica, but with their own elements added to the mix. Sam Tracii's vocals de have a very strong feel of Jason Hetfield as does some of the guitar tone, but the song writing is deeper and richer if you dig past those layers and delve deeper. Absolutely worth checking out and keeping an eye on as their career unfolds.
Today we go to Brazil as TML looks at the traditional metalheads known as Nosferatu. With a couple of demos, an EP, a split and a live recording under their bullet belts, and with their debut full length, Satan's Child in the works, Nosferatu are quietly building up a reputation as a no frills, plenty of thrills type of band honing the sound of the NWOBHM and other 80s metal bands of yore. Check them out and raise the metal banners high!
Psychedelic stoner metal from Austin, TX and featuring a pair of former members of the vastly underrated Scorpion Child, Duel have a throwback 70s vibe and cite such influences as the James Gang, Thin Lizzy, BOC, Humble Pie and naturally Sabbath. Tom Frank, Shaun Avants, JD Shadowz and Jeff Henson round out this fearsome foursome and hot on the heels of the incredible debut release Fears Of The Dead, they are poised to make an impact on the scene!
From Slovenia we have a four piece band that combines European Power Metal with a bit of a Swedish-like melodic metal to present a fairly mature sounding sonic assault. Silent Pray have given us their first taste with their brand new debut EP, Metropolis Of Dreams and a lyric video for their first single, The Nest! Check them out and give them some support!
Today we are going to check out some very solid thrash out of the UK. Unlike many thrash bands today where the songs are short and barely distinguishable from one track to the other, Merichane comes through with some meat on the bone and really stand head and shoulders above the vast majority that is plaguing the thrash scene. The band just released their debut four song ep and it serves as a nice appetizer of what to expect in the future. I will be keeping an ear out for this band going forward as they have lots of raw potential to make an impact on the underground in the foreseeable future. In the meantime, pop this on and proceed to bang thy heads!
Today we are going to take a quick look at some really underrated metal coming out of Uruguay. Spiritcraft are a classic five piece, twin guitar attack band from Montevideo that blends some traditional metal with a solid power metal base and then sprinkle some melodic death on top for a multi-layered sound which can be heard in their debut single Apparition. The band has been together for about four years under their current moniker and before that they spent a similar amount of time as Dagorlad. They are entering the studio next month to record some new music and it will be interesting to see what they come up with. In the meantime Apparition is here to hold us over until then!
Storming out of Westchester County, New York, this fearsome foursome are making their marks in the Tri-State area. Fueled by a debut EP called This Wicked World, Earthbound are getting set to build upon their name. Having formed in 2007, initially under the unassuming moniker of R230 and citing the usual influences of Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Rush, Slayer, Fate, etcetera one can see what direction the band is heading. Loud, Dark and Heavy is what the band describe themselves and I find that to be rather fitting. Featuring Jacquelyn Smith: Vocals Joe Rosado: Guitar: David Ayra: Guitar, Bass, and Jeff DiTaranto: Drums, if you see these belting metalheads on a bill in your area, consider checking them out, I know I would!
