South Carolina based horror thrashers, Prowler have put out a couple of releases now over the last few years and I have really enjoyed their unique approach since I first heard their 2013 release After You (which was a re-release of their first four two track EPs and a bonus track). For those of you not familiar with Prowler, each track is based on a different classic horror movie and includes sound bites from the movie itself incorporated very nicely into their music. Musically they have a very driving and thrashy style of heavy metal. It’s not all out thrash and in fact some of the riffs have a doomy quality from time to time such as the beginning of their cool cover of The Ramones’ Pet Sematary as one such instance. This CD is right up there with their other releases in quality and as of now I can’t decide if it is better than After You or not as I have played that release pretty religiously over the last couple of years. I can see me doing similar to this one as there is something very infectious about the Prowler approach. Prowlite Hail is the mastermind here and he does the guitar and vocals, both of which he handles with gusto and aplomb. His particular vocal style fits the kind of music they play rather nicely. The riffs are strong and crunchy and with so many classic horror movies out there, there is still plenty of material waiting to be written. All killer no filler is overused but still very apropos here. Can’t end the review without a shoutout to the very good work the rhythm section has done to keep things in line here - Shawn Bruce and Jak Sumwalt (bass and drums respectively have done a great job! Time to turn out the lights and watch a marathon of zombies, vampires and slashers!
